Scarlett Bruns To Grace The Cover Of FutuReale Magazine

Canadian filmmaker/actress Scarlett Bruns and her upcoming film "Heart of Dance" are FutuReale Magazine's cover story for their May issue!

Looking Glass Foundation For Eating Disorders is behind Scarlett Bruns’ new feature film “Heart of Dance”. The film tells the story of teen Kealy Charmichael, who tries to fulfill her sister Anna’s dream of becoming a professional dancer in spite of a tragic family accident. During the film, Kealy struggles with an eating disorder, a topic that Bruns says is important to address. “I don’t have an eating disorder myself, but as a dancer, I’ve seen so many young girls struggle with their weight and with body image and I really wanted to help.” say actress Tara-Jean Popowich who is set to play the principal dancer in the film and won “So You Think You Can Dance Canada” in 2009.

“I wanted to make this film because I lost a friend to an eating disorder,” says Bruns. “I’ve always been a ‘plus sized dancer’. I’ve struggled with my weight and been teased about it all my life.” Bruns, who also plays the lead role, says she has script approval from The Looking Glass Foundation for Eating Disorders and is donating partial profit of the film to help build a treatment centre for youth in BC. "Instead of just donating to a charity, this will actually raise public awareness," says Bruns. "You can get a hundred people to donate $1,000 each, but that doesn't encourage other people to do it, which is what I hope “Heart of Dance” will do." Terence Winkless (“Twice as Dead”, Disney Channel’s “White Wolves 2: Legends of the Wild”, TV’s “Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers”) is set to direct. “Everyone in the cast and crew is so committed to this film,” she continues. “Some have agreed to work for no pay just to make sure we get this film made. Some have family members struggling with the disease. It makes their performances so poignant. All we need now is the rest of the funding.”

Bruns who at just 23 years old has produced 5 non-profit films and runs Bruns Family Productions says she’s one of a new breed of filmmakers who is utilizing the Internet and social media to build momentum and get her projects to theatres. Her most recent film “Sunday’s Child” was a Leo Award nominee.

Hilary Grist's Cardboard Piano-City to be Displayed at Vancouver's Beaumont Gallery

The Beaumont Gallery has announced they will be displaying Vancouver songwriter Hilary Grist's cardboard piano-city, the astonishing set of her new music video 'Tall Buildings', beginning with a gala opening on Thursday, November 10th.

The impressively detailed piece took over two months to create and was built from recycled cardboard in Hilary’s 600 square foot Vancouver apartment.

Grist was just awarded $10,000 and 4th place in the extremely competitive Peak Performance Project 2011 contest.

"There’s been an strong demand to see the cardboard piano-city set in person.” says Hilary. “We’re so happy it’s going to be on display at a fabulous gallery like the Beaumont, now we just have to figure out how to move it!”

In the three weeks since its release, the video has captured the imaginations of over 40 newspapers and online tastemakers including The Vancouver Sun, The Province and The Maple Ridge News. In addition, ‘Tall Buildings’ and the subsequent ‘making of’ video have been featured on a wide variety of websites ranging from popular craft and recycling sites to Arabic news portal Actionha.

Since the 2010 release of her debut full length album, ‘Imaginings’, Hilary has truly taken the DIY independent artist mentality to heart; from hand drawing her popular stop-motion cartoon music videos to creating cardboard buildings, cars and miniature characters. “It’s really fun to watch how art and music can intersect,” says Grist.

The piano will remain on exhibit at the gallery until Nov 22.

Robyn and Ryleigh, two up and coming musical artists based out of Langley, BC are also involved in the project. “We’re very excited to have Robyn and Ryleigh create original music for the film,” says Bruns. “So many people are coming forward and wanting to be part of this project,” she continues. Bruns is also putting together PSA’s to run at the end of the movie featuring local celebrities and has been in contact with many Hollywood celebrities including Haylie Duff, Cory Montieth and Ellen DeGeneres who has expressed interest in potentially talking to Bruns and her cast once the project is complete. “This film is going to make a difference in people’s lives,” says Bruns, “plus, it’s a really good story.”

Vancouver Actress & Dancer Kaitlin Cheung Wins 2011 Young Artist Award

Vancouver actress and dancer Kaitlin Cheung recently won the Young Artist Award in the category of 'Best Performance' for her leading role in the short film “The Perfect Gift for Flora.” The nine-year-old edged out seven other young performers to claim this honor, and traveled with her family to Los Angeles to accept the award. Kaitlin is trained as a Ballet, Tap and Jazz dancer, and is a member of the competitive dance group at her dance school. She is currently working on her next project, an exciting and meaningful role as a dancer in the upcoming feature film, “Heart of Dance.” The film chronicles a high school senior's quest to fulfill her late younger sister's dream of becoming a professional dancer and her subsequent struggle with an eating disorder. It is intended to raise awareness of eating disorders and thirty-percent of the profits will be donated to the Looking Glass Foundation For Eating Disorders, a non-profit organization which is working to open Canada's first treatment centre for adolescents.

Kaitlin's other credits include an appearance on the hit television series “Fairly Legal,” a featured Extra in the movie “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” and the "I Believe” CTV Olympic commercial with actor Donald Sutherland, and several toy commercials for Fisher Price and Hasbro. Kaitlin has also appeared in several Print Ads including 'Teva Shoes' and the 'Manitoba Telephone Company'.

Kaitlin lives in Vancouver with her mom, dad, two brothers, puppy Mochi and pet bird Felix. She plays the piano and loves to sing, dance and perform. In her spare time, Kaitlin enjoys playing with friends, her dolls, drawing and reading. She hopes to be an actress, teacher, dancer and/or fashion designer when she grows up. Hilary Grist Builds Full Size Cardboard Piano City For Music Video

'This is one craziest things I've ever done and my most ambitious arts and crafts project to date!” With a little help from her friends and a lot of recycled cardboard, singer-songwriter, Hilary Grist, has created an 8 foot long, 5 foot wide piano made out of cardboard with a city inspired by Vancouver reaching 6 feet high on top. The cardboard city is the centerpiece in Hilary's newest music video 'Tall Buildings'.

The project was supposed to span two or three days but ended up taking more than two months to complete. 'It seemed like a fairly simple task in the beginning but let me tell you, once you start building a cardboard city – you just can’t stop!' says Hilary.

This was made even more difficult by the fact that the city set was built and filmed inside Hilary's 600 square foot studio apartment. 'All of my furniture is still on the patio!' exclaims Grist. 'I don't know what I'm more excited about, taking back my apartment, or releasing the video.'

There have been many venues interested in displaying the cardboard piano city. 'The piano city combines art and green awareness in a really fun way,' says Grist. 'I hope that it can be on display to show people what can be done with re-using in a creative way.'

'Tall Buildings' is currently in rotation on 100.5 FM The Peak. Hilary is currently a top 20 finalist in this year's Peak Performance Project, Vancouver's premier artist development contest.

Fleur Jack North American Tour for September/October 2011

New Zealand based singer songwriter Fleur Jack is heading off to tour North America this September/ October.

Fleur has previously played music in Canada, Hong Kong, Australia and all over New Zealand but this is the first trip to introduce Canadian and American audiences to songs from her debut album "Ghosts of Cimarron."

In 2010 Fleur Raised 9000 Euro on the website Sellaband to make her debut solo album with. "Ghosts of Cimarron" was recorded this year in one of New Zealand’s top studios The Lab and mastered in Hollywood at Bernie Grundman Mastering. Now that the album is ready for release, Fleur is hitting the road on the other side of the world to spread the word about her music.

Much of the music on Fleur’s debut album was inspired by a trip last year to visit family in a small Colorado town Trinidad which borders New Mexico. Fleur will be playing music in the towns that inspired the album including the famously haunted “St James Hotel” in Cimarron New Mexico.

Fleur's song 'Not My Fault' has recently been featured on a compilation called 'We Will Rise Again' alongside Lionel Ritchie.

Warren Dean Flandez To Celebrate Debut Album Release With In-Store Concert In Vancouver At HMV Robson

Canadian soul singer, songwriter and producer Warren Dean Flandez and his 8-‐piece band will take the stage at 7:00 pm on Friday, May 13th, for a free, all ages soulfully charged concert at HMV Robson Street in Downtown Vancouver. The showcase is in celebration of the release of Warren’s highly anticipated debut album, Vintage Love.

Vintage Love will be available for purchase exclusively at HMV on May 13th, with a full release on May 17th on 30 Records/Fontana North.

“Vintage Love is a tribute to artists past, present and future, keeping soul alive," said Warren. "I am so honored to debut this album at HMV Robson, an icon of music and entertainment in Vancouver.”

Vintage Love, which bridges the gap between the timeless sounds of 60s soul and contemporary hip-‐ hop, is a nod to soul greats Warren grew up listening to. It features 13 songs ranging from soul anthems, R&B jams, and heart wrenching ballads, most of which were co-‐written and co-‐produced by Warren.

Vintage Love features the talents of Warren’s longtime producer, co-‐writer and friend, Mike Southworth, and key song writing collaborations with Roc Nation’s Andrea Martin (Leona Lewis, En Vogue) and Printz Board (The Black Eyed Peas). Notable tracks include ‘Ungrateful’, a duet with R&B

Actor Connor Levins Guest Stars In Premiere Of Showcase Original Series "Endgame"

Vancouver child actor Connor Levins guest-stars in the pilot episode of the new Showcase original series Endgame, a 13-part drama which premieres March 14th and is scheduled to air Mondays at 10pm ET/PT. Showcase describes Endgame as the story of former World Chess Champion Arkady Balagan who develops a debilitating case of agoraphobia after witnessing the murder of his fiancée. Unable to leave his hotel and running out of money, the arrogant and charismatic Russian inadvertently becomes a detective - using his fierce analytical skills to solve baffling crimes. Connor has also landed a guest role in an episode of the new YTV sitcom Mr. Young, which premieres this spring. He is very excited to be appearing in both of these exciting new shows and is currently available for interviews and personal appearances upon request. http://www.showcase.ca/endgame/

Connor was born June 21, 1999 to Carina and James Levins, he has an older sister Kayla and younger sister Avril. He grew up in Coquitlam, BC and moved to Pitt Meadows when he was three. Connor has been acting since he was an infant and landed his first film role in My Videographer before the age of two. He went on to play Baby Kahuna in the film Superbabies: Baby Geniuses 2, in which his sister Kayla also appeared. To-date, Connor has been in over 45 professional shoots for commercials, television and movies, including Hiccups, Kids Court, Supernatural, Smallville, The Betrayed, The Most Wonderful Time of Year and Trick r Treat.

At the age of nine, Connor was nominated for a Young Artist Award for best performance in a TV movie, miniseries or special for The Most Wonderful Time of Year. Connor starred in the Hallmark Channel movie with actors Henry Winkler and Brooke Burns.

Today marks the release of Volume 5 of the Very Vancouver Christmas cd, in benefit of the SPCA. The six year old idea still makes good, and this year Rave On Studio has the big guns to prove it.

"You never know until you ask" Producer Jenn Ashton says when talking about how she met John Jorgenson, had him come up to Vancouver for a live show and then harassed him for a Christmas song for this years benefit album. "He told me to!" she laughs. And in the end it paid off with a special duet written and performed by John Jorgenson and Carlene Carter, and yes it does include lots of guitar licks, which Jorgenson is famous for.

Not to over shadow our own local talent though, of which there is plenty, including: Adam Popowitz, Sheldon Witt, Matt Stanley and the Decoys, The Light Machines, Laurie Biagini, Olga Osipova, Connor McGuire, Michelle Richard, Treebeard, Pam Carr, Danny Echo and Daphne Kalfon.

To celebrate this special edition cd as well, she also had the cd cover art and some of the website art made by Rave On Artist's children.

My Favorite Teacher

I attended P.S. 164 Elementary School in Kew Gardens Hills, Queens, NY from Kindergarten through 6th grade and loved every minute of it (except for Mrs. Hoffman in 2nd grade). I walked to school and back from my house around the corner every day with my friends from the neighborhood. My favorite teacher ever was Mrs. Belle Simon and I was priviliged to have had her as my teacher for both 1st and 3rd grade. Although she was best known as "Paul Simon's Mom" (of Simon & Garfunkel), but I thought of Paul as "Belle Simon's son", she was an amazing person in her own right. Mrs. Simon was a petite woman with red hair and a warm, loving smile. I adored her. She bubbled with enthusiasm, love for her profession and love for her students. We were occasionally reminded of her famous son, especially the few times he surprised us with a visit to our classroom. One of the coolest things Mrs. Simon ever did for me was get my Bridge Over Trouble Water album autographed by Paul...I still have it! Her son Eddie was my favorite guitar teacher too! Anyway, I heard that Belle passed away a few years ago and was extremely saddened by the news. She lives on in my memories and in my heart for being so good to me and for making a little girl feel so smart and so special all those years ago!

Why In The World Would A New Yorker Relocate To Vancouver?

This is the question I get asked most frequently. “What brought you to Vancouver?” Apparently it is a much more likely scenario that a New Yorker would move to either Toronto or Montreal than Vancouver. However, if one wants the laid-back lifestyle of the West Coast of Canada, Vancouver is a more logical choice. To me, Toronto or Montreal would have been more of the same. But the simple answer to the question is that I fell in love….not with a man, but with the city of Vancouver. It was a love affair pure and simple. I made my first visit to Vancouver in 2001, right after 9/11. In fact, I was one of the first to fly out of New York after the airports were reopened for the second time. My trip had been planned several months before and, despite the chaos, I was delayed by only a few days.

I arrived in Vancouver for the first time by way of Texas on the Sunday following 9/11. It was quite a surreal experience….on the morning of Tuesday 9/11 I was driving to my hair salon when all of a sudden I heard the news that the planes had hit the towers and could see the smoke and debris in the sky…and then only a few days later, I was on Granville Island in Vancouver, dining at Bridges and praying for those I left behind in NY.. The reason for my trip? I had been doing some PR work for an actor who had a recurring role on Stargate SG-1, which was filmed in Vancouver and I was in town to meet with him and attend a Stargate convention. As a lifetime science fiction television and film fan, Vancouver is THE place to be, the mecca of sci-fi filming. As soon as I set foot in this town, I felt it was a fit. Upon my first glimpse of English Bay and the mountains and my first breath of the fresh, crisp Pacific Northwest air, I had found my new home.
